Mexico's favorite of the tournament did everything without scoring a 0-0 draw with Trinidad and Tobago in the first Group A match of the CONCACAF Gold Cup at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Saturday.
The Mexicans had a 30-4 chance in the draw and Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Marvin Phillip made seven saves while his teammates had no guns. Mexico, which owned 82.5% of the estate, came back with an unsolicited goal in the 91st minute of sleep.
Hirving Lozano was released early in the game due to a head injury and was taken to hospital. Lozano, who plays as a winger for Napoli in Italy's Serie A, was knocked down in the 11th minute when he hit the post and when he fell head over to Phillip's knee.
The play continued as Lozano was on the ground and Hector Herrera quickly exploded the ball before the match was suspended for seven minutes to pay attention to the disabled player.
Mexico came close to scoring in the 84th minute when Phillip scored a convincing goal in a 30-yard strike from Jesus Corona.
The Mexicans were so dominant that they were commended for being allowed twice in the game compared to the 41st of Trinidad and Tobago.
The match was suspended by the referee in the 87th and 94th minutes because of songs that offended gays. Two Mexican matches in the CONCACAF Nations League last month were also delayed for the same reason.
Trinidad and Tobago failed to advance to the final round of World Cup qualifiers in the CONCACAF region and qualified for the Gold Cup only after beating French Guiana 8-7 on penalties on Tuesday.
The defending champion, who has won the tournament eight times since its inception in 1991, will play Guatemala on Wednesday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas while Trinidad and Tobago meet El Salvador at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
