KC games beat Sautiers 3-1 closer to the West

Johnny Russell and Daniel Salloi scored in the first half, Cameron Duke added his first MLS goal in the second minute and Sporting Kansas City gave Seattle their first home loss of the season, beating the Sounders 3-1 on Sunday night.


The game of the top two teams in the Western Conference went to the side trying to oust the leaders. Kansas City (9-3-3) drew within two points for Seattle (9-2-5) in Western games and have a game in hand. Sautiers have dropped a point behind New England in the overall MLS lead.


Russel gave Kansas City the first chance to curb a free kick from Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland in the 31st minute. Russel built up a free kick outside the penalty area and his shot appeared to catch Seattle unexpectedly as he was still in good stead.

Salloi scored his ninth goal of the season just before half-time over the counter following Seattle's relentless play by Kelyn Rowe.


And Duke handed the capper in the 72nd minute after Seattle took a 2-1 lead and missed several chances to draw. Duke did not sit next to him and voted on his first goal when he passed Graham Zusi.


Kansas City are unbeaten in their fifth of four wins.



Seattle set an unbeaten MLS record in his first 13 games to start the season but missed two of his last three. The Sautiers appear frustrated and tired against Kansas City, playing their third game seven days after the road games at Minnesota United and Austin FC.


Seattle started the MLS youth record with a 1-0 win over Austin on Thursday night and while the rest of the season returned to action against Kansas City it was still an unbeaten effort.

Fredy Montero strengthened Seattle when he scored early in the second half. Montero almost aimed to kick the bike in the first half to see it thrown to the side by Kansas City goalkeeper Tim Melia.


Montero scored in the 51st minute with his left foot scrubbed in the penalty area past Melia. The sound almost echoed even moments later when Raul Ruidiaz tried to break the post after Melia appeared to be in the wrong.


Melani declined to comment with Ruidiaz in the back of the post during the suspension.
