SAN FRANCISCO - Six Magnitude earthquakes rocked both sides of the California-Nevada border, threw rocks on a highway, and sounded as far away as Las Vegas and San Francisco, as the days of the next earthquake were predicted, authorities said.

Earthquake just before 4 p.m. On Thursday it headed south of Lake Tahoe near Walker, a rural community with several hundred homes east of Sierra Nevada. No major damage or injuries were reported, authorities said.

It was followed by a series of earthquakes, including at least half a dozen or more, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

"The ground shook violently, and everything started to fall apart," said Carolina Estrada, manager of Walker Coffee Company. Bottles of syrup cracked, dishes fell to the floor and the store's roof came down a bit.

The quake lasted 30 seconds or more, he said.

"We have run out of the building," Estrada said. But the quake continued, and "massive car-sized stones" crashed into the U.S. 395 nearby, he said.

The California Highway Patrol said some vehicles were pelted with stones but no injuries were reported. A video from the drivers showed the cars moving slowly around large stone blocks littered the road.

At one point, the cracks in the rocks closed about 40 miles [40 km] in the center, a major thoroughfare through the northern part of Sierra Nevada, but the road was opened a few hours later.
