Don Mattingly will return to take over the Miami Marlins in 2022, general manager Kim Ng said on Thursday.
Ng made the decision during Bally Sports Florida's broadcast of the Miami game on Thursday afternoon against the Los Angeles Dodgers, saying the Marlins would work together to agree on a 2022 Mattingly contract.
"We have used part of our [agreement], and Donnie has said he wants to come back in 2022," he said. "So we're very happy with that one."
Mattingly, 60, is in his sixth season with the Marlins and entered Thursday with a 345-446 record with the club. He is a winning and long-serving manager in the history of the Marlins franchise.
Miami is 38-47 years old this season after his run in last year's game under Mattingly, who was appointed National League Manager of the Year in 2020 after leading the club record 31-29 and NLDS appearances in a short period of epidemic.
"Donnie has never been out of work, and I think that's one of his best qualities," Ng said on Thursday. "He's incredibly patient. I think he has a great way with young players. He's optimistic about them."
The Marlins have been plagued by injuries to key players this season, including forward, Stlingling Marte, third baseman Veteran Brian Anderson and Sixto Sanchez.
All-Star and American League MVP six times during his game against the Yankees, Mattingly also managed the Dodgers for five seasons from 2011 to 2015, to 446-363 and reached the postseason three times during that time.
